Programming & SQL
The baseline for building and debugging pipelines. Show it in production work, not only in a skills list.
Pipelines & orchestration
The core of the role: move data reliably, on a schedule, with recoverable failures.
Cloud & infrastructure
Most modern data platforms run here. Name the stack you have actually operated.
Reliability & governance
Data engineers are trusted with correctness and uptime; these terms separate pipeline builders from platform owners.
Collaboration
Pipelines serve analysts, product teams and downstream systems. Show the interface, not only the code.

What this means for your Data Engineer resume
Python is the real baseline
66.7% of the sampled Data Engineer JDs mention Python, more than SQL (55.9%). Put Python in a pipeline or tooling bullet, not only in a skills list.
Data modeling outranks Spark
Data Modeling (47.7%) and Data Pipelines (46.8%) appear more often than Spark (19.8%). Employers want reliable models and orchestration before big-data logos.
Production ownership shows up as security and monitoring
Security (43.2%), Monitoring (39.6%) and Data Quality (36.9%) are common. A pipeline that has never been operated is only half the story.
How to use these keywords without stuffing
A keyword map is a menu, not a checklist to paste into every section. Use the term where it is true, and prove it in the same bullet.
Mirror the JD's exact wording
If the posting says “stakeholder management”, use that phrase instead of a synonym. Include both the acronym and the full form when relevant (A/B testing, experimentation).
Put the keyword inside a result
The skills section gets parsed; the experience bullet gets read. Pair the tool with scale and outcome — users, revenue, latency, hours saved, decision changed.
Cover the cluster, not one word
A JD asking for Python usually also mentions adjacent tools or methods. Show the cluster in one bullet instead of repeating the same keyword everywhere.
A safe Data Engineer skills-section order
Programming & SQL → pipelines & orchestration → cloud & infrastructure → reliability & governance. Put the pipeline outcome in experience bullets, not just in a tools list.
Common Data Engineer resume mistakes
These are the patterns that make a keyword-rich resume read like a tool inventory instead of evidence.
Tool soup
Listing every tool you have touched without saying what you built or changed. A list of tools without a pipeline, volume or reliability outcome is weak. Show what data moved, what broke, and what your fix changed.
Keyword stuffing
Repeating the same term in the summary, skills list and every bullet. Recruiters notice; it reads like SEO copy, not evidence.
Ignoring the human reader
ATS keywords get you parsed; stakeholder communication and outcomes get you interviewed. Use the keyword as the noun inside a result, not as the whole sentence.

Before / after: turn duties into evidence
ATS keywords are necessary, but hiring managers still read the bullet. Put the keyword inside a result. These are illustrative rewrites based on the keyword data above.
Built ETL pipelines.
Built 14 Airflow and dbt pipelines moving 40M rows/day from Postgres to Snowflake; cut failed runs by 70% with retries and data-quality checks.
Designed data models.
Modeled a 12-table star schema in dbt for finance reporting; reduced a core query from 8 minutes to 40 seconds.
Used AWS.
Provisioned S3, Glue and Redshift with Terraform; cut new-environment setup from two days to 30 minutes.
How we built this page
We collected 111 recent postings titled Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, Big Data Engineer and Data Architect from Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever, Arbeitnow, Working Nomads, Jobicy on Oct 26, 2026. Duplicate postings were removed. A keyword counts once per JD; percentages are the share of JDs that mention it.
The sample skews toward tech and remote-first companies. Traditional enterprise data teams may weight SQL, warehouse vendors and governance differently, so treat the percentages as directional rather than universal.
Method and limitations
- Source mix: Greenhouse 58 · Ashby 28 · Arbeitnow 13 · Jobicy 8 · Lever 3 · Working Nomads 1.
- The before/after bullets are illustrative, not real candidate resumes.
- This is an ATS-style keyword and formatting check, not a reproduction of any employer's private screening system.
Data Engineer resume FAQ
What keywords should a Data Engineer resume have?
In our 111-JD sample, the highest-frequency terms were Python (66.7%), SQL (55.9%), data modeling (47.7%), data pipelines (46.8%) and AWS (39.6%). The map above groups the terms by programming, orchestration, cloud, reliability and collaboration. Mirror the exact terms in the job description, and keep only what you can prove.
Is Python or SQL more important for a Data Engineer?
Both are core. Python appears in 66.7% of these JDs and SQL in 55.9%. SQL is the interface to the warehouse; Python is often the pipeline and tooling language. Show both in production work rather than listing them as skills.
Do I need Spark or Kafka?
Only when the job names them. Spark appears in 19.8% and Kafka in 21.6%, while Airflow (30.6%) and dbt (30.6%) appear more often in this sample. A smaller team may care more about reliable batch pipelines than streaming infrastructure.
Should I list every cloud provider?
AWS (39.6%), Azure (28.8%) and GCP (27.0%) all appear. List the cloud you have actually operated, then show the service and the outcome. A long list of clouds without a production example is weak.
How do I show data quality experience?
Data Quality appears in 36.9% and Monitoring in 39.6% of the sample. Describe a check, alert or incident: what bad data looked like, how you caught it, and what the fix prevented.
How many keywords should a Data Engineer resume have?
Aim for roughly 15–25 role-specific terms across skills and experience, not a separate keyword dump. Start with the terms in the job description, then keep the ones you can prove with a pipeline, volume or reliability result.
Is this a real ATS score?
No. This is an ATS-style keyword and formatting check, not a reproduction of any employer's private screening system. Different ATS platforms rank candidates differently. Use it to find gaps, not as a guarantee.
